DONNA MOFFATT, BILL CASHELL, AND RHONDA PARKINSON

Bob Cashell was the Socialites’ special guest at the April luncheon. In her introduction of Mr. Cashell, Rhonda Parkinson noted he is a retired college professor from Nebraska who has served as a guest lecturer on cruise ships. He was also a guest of the Travel Club where he shared his knowledge of the Mayan culture.

Cashell has also become an authority on maintaining memory health. In his presentation he explained causes and characteristics of Altheimer’s disease and dementia. He also explained there are things we can do to prevent these forms of memory loss which have been on the rise in recent years. At the top of his list of healthy lifestyle behaviors is a diet without sugar and processed foods. He also said that, although the process might be slow, it is never too late to restore memory by retraining the brain.

He suggested that we can deal with even our small concerns of poor memory by “paying attention.” We can train ourselves to focus by saying out loud things we want to remember. For example, we should repeat a person’s name aloud when we’re introduced. We should say aloud to ourselves things like “I am putting the car keys on the desk.” These tips and others were encouraging words for everyone there who believed she was growing more forgetful. Bill Cashell, and his wife Cathy are Herons Glen residents.

President Donna Moffatt opened this last meeting of the season by thanking her fellow officers and committee chairman for their contributions to the Socialites. She also expressed best wishes to Finny Noffsinger who is moving to Kentucky. Kathleen Coletti praised Janine Stepanich and her staff for the delicious luncheons. Sue McCoy, who had decorated the tables for each meeting, has consented to be treasurer next season. Retiring after ten years as treasurer, Bev Groft reported that the member contribution to All Souls outreach program of $633 together with March’s gift totaled $1,331.00.

Although Socialites will not meet formally May through September, informal luncheons are scheduled on the third Thursdays at 11:30 in The Nest. Members are asked to make reservations and order from the menu.
