Approximately ten years ago, Ron Glasgow (a former resident) and Larry Cummings had the idea for friends to participate in a game that was very popular – MARBLES! This is a board game also known as Jokers and Marbles or Jokers and Pegs and is played with cards which determine your moves around the board. Everyone who joined in had a great time and thus began a monthly event in the ballroom from October through April each season. Larry, a fairly competitive sort of person, suggested that the games be played with teams of men vs. teams of women. This became a competition but on that very first game night the WOMEN were victorious by one game; and to his utter embarrassment this victory was due to the MEN losing at Larry’s table. Back then about 20 tables would fill the ballroom and the evening was both loud and fun because tables had to shout out their table number and whether women or men won. A total of three games were played keeping a record of wins throughout the season to determine whether men or women were leading.
Sadly, April 26, 2026, was the last tournament ever for this very fun game. Over the years MEN had many victorious seasons but in this the final season, WOMEN were the victors on the last night and the last season, winning 65 games to only 63 games for the Men! Though only 8 tables played on that last evening everyone there had just as great a time as on the very first night.
