SUMMER IS HURRICANE SEASON
Summer is nearly here and so is the hurricane season. Is your yard ready for the heat, the rain, the wind and the bugs? This article will provide a few helpful tips for your yard.
First, avoid ballistic missiles. Yard ornaments can go flying in the high winds and do quite a bit of damage as well as potentially injure someone. If you are a snowbird, please put them away before you start your migration north. Items in lanais and loggias can become airborne so make sure they are moved inside or made secure.
Check your lamp and mailbox posts to make sure they are solid and won’t be knocked over in the wind. Are you having issues with your light on the lamp post? Some GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) switches in the garage get weak over time. There are handymen in the Glen who can change them if you are having a problem.
Large plants near lanai screens can cause tears in those screens. Pigmy palms are a common example of plants many have in their yards. Be sure they are trimmed back to prevent them from slamming into your screens or house. If you have new plantings, be sure they are staked to prevent them being blown over.
Lawn care is a year-round effort. You should be applying fertilizer and bug control now, before the summer moratorium on yard applications. If you have grubs, the sooner you eliminate them the better. One hint that you may have a problem is seeing birds digging in your lawn for those pesty little creatures. Birds aren’t the only ones hungry for a meal. Feral pigs like grubs and have been known to tear up lawns here in the Glen. Some were spotted recently across Hwy 41. Early prevention can avoid costly repairs later on.
If you are going to be away for an extended time, who is watching your house? Be sure to leave them some weed killer if you have weeds that pop up in your driveway. You might also consider using a landscaper to maintain your yard if you are away for extended periods. Even though you are away, you are still obligated to keep your yard looking great.
Finally, let the HOA office know your contact information as well as who is watching your house. Use this link: https://heronsglenhoa.wufoo.com/forms/x8pvf130iuhsji
Have a great summer wherever your journeys take you.
