A few times a month you may notice residents riding through your neighborhood looking closely at the houses and yards. Both the Architecture and Grounds Committees’ volunteers are responsible for ensuring that the Herons Glen standards are being maintained. The standards were created to help maintain the beauty of the paradise we live in. These standards help keep our property values high.
The Grounds volunteers also look for issues that could become bigger problems. For example, could “dollar weeds” be spreading from one yard to the next? If a tree looks sick, could it have a disease? Palm trees are susceptible to “Ganoderma Butt Rot.” There is no cure and it can also spread to neighboring trees.
Many of our residents go far above the standards in caring for their yards. Their landscape design, choice of plants, trimming and maintenance provide unique scapes that are a joy to behold. To recognize the efforts of those residents, the Grounds Committee created the ‘Beautiful Yard’ award a few years ago. As Grounds volunteers pass through your neighborhood, they are also looking for the next possible award winner. These recognition awards are usually given once or twice a year, after being reviewed and voted on by the entire committee.

Which yard will be next? The selection process involves reviewing the submissions from the committee members who provide pictures and reasons for their nomination. The residents are usually not aware that their yard is under consideration until the selection has been finalized. Keep reading the Heron for which yard(s) may be the next winner.
